W & H of Ethnography

Ethnography relies on observation or participant observation in natural settings. It is a broad methodologicl approach in that it may include different sets of instruments used to describe everyday human behaviour. An ethnographic study results in written description of matters such as social organization, social activities, symbolic and material resources and practices of a particular group of people (Duranti, 1997). This blog tries to conceptualize one journey into becoming a full fledged ethnographer!

Visual Ethnography

Visual ethnography is the use of visual arts in ethnographic research. These include photography, audiovisual material, hypermedia, art and drawing. The answer to the question of whether a photograph for instance can be used as an ethnographic material highly depends on the audience. In this space I'll include a number of photo's that I've taken, that I think are of ethnographic value.

The making of the Lebanese traditional bread

A village lady from Lebanon was kind enough to allow taking photos of her while she was making the Lebanese bread (The marqooq) in the traditional way using a special stove (the saj stove). The saj stove top almost resembles an upside down wok!

First: prepare the dough and take a small piece

Second step: Flatten the dough on the wooden board

Third step: pat untill smooth and even
Fourth step: place on the special pillow

Fifth step: place on top of the stove. Note the anxious face of the lady patiently monitoring for the result!
